#RecordedLIVE Presents: Scott Candlish

A monthly blog showcasing upcoming Artists #RECORDEDLIVE at Mr. BANG! Studios.

Singer songwriter Scott Candlish has just launched his third EP, 'A Little While, a Bit of Time' while temporarily residing in the city of Edinburgh for the last two years.

After making the big move from his hometown of Melbourne to Scotland, the singer songwriter has been refining his alt-folk style with regular shows in the vibrant UK city. Earlier this year Candlish first went into the studio to make the record after writing and collaborating with local musicians.

While experimenting with new sounds, Candlish continues writing with a favoured blend of indie folk, fingerstyle and alternative rock that can now be heard in the new EP. The songs reflect upon both the challenges and rewards established in his time away from home with an output lending influence from favourites Bon Iver, Angus and Julia Stone and Ben Howard.

'Heartfelt harmonies, slick acoustics and great, gripping lyrics centred around his interesting life experiences and the natural fallout from those' Small Music Scene.

After a packed out launch show in Edinburgh, Candlish embarked on his first European tour that included dates in Manchester, Glasgow and a Sofar Sounds showcase in London and Paris. The tour also expanded his international reach with intimate shows in Berlin, Lyon, and Barcelona. Leaving behind Melbourne's diverse and lively music scene was hard, but has since been an enriching and stimulating experience for Candlish. In August 2018 Candlish was busy during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, heavily involved in the PBH Free Fringe events performing to and reaching a wider international audience.

Prior to his third record, he released 2 EP’s in ‘Elusive’ and ‘Home Away From Home’, both launched at Melbourne's Workers Club. His debut EP solidly identified his earlier rock influences while his sophomore record saw the embellishment of a more diverse instrumentation and embodied a new wave of folk influence.

‘Dulcet acoustic sing-alongs dripping with melancholy’ – ‘Home Away From Home’ Tone Deaf Premiere.

After an explosive start to 2019, the latter end of the year will see a return to his home of Melbourne. Until then the indie folk songwriter has busy months ahead with an inclusion at Butefest and another Fringe festival.

Scott Candlish - "One More Night"

What are you listening to right now?

"Generally what I listen to is a complete mixed bag of genres from folk to metal to rap. But in the last few months I haven't stopped listening to Ry X, a fellow Aussie! He has two albums of songs that just melt into each other with beautiful melodies and layered harmonies. Quite simple chord progressions but ultimately proving less is more."

Who would your dream collaboration be with? (Past or present)

"I find it intimidating to think about collaborating with bands or artists I love listening to. When I write I like to be completed alone with little to no distractions. I would however have loved to be in a room with Paul or John to observe and learn from their songwriting techniques, so maybe one of these two."

Scott Candlish - "In My Life" (The Beatles)

Where was your first ever gig and where is your dream venue to play?

"I think I'll always remember my first gig back in Melbourne, my local suburban Pub The Hawthorn Hotel in late 2010. It was a Thursday night, they had weekly gigs on the night a special night called Travelling Rock Circus, huge shout out to Jimi and Gaurav! I was pretty bloody nervous but it was great fun!"

When did you start writing original music?

"I was a bit of a late bloomer with writing my own songs. I toyed with ideas in late high school but nothing came about until I was 19 and I'm still working on it!"

Scott Candlish - "Missing"

Why did you decide to pursue music?

"Similarly I didn't think about doing it properly until a little later and certainly not properly until a few years after my first gig. The satisfaction of writing songs that are a little deeper and certainly mean a lot to you is a large driving force."
